Nick Monroy - Katie Faris - Dir. by Joe Zona
Synopsis

The Time Between is a short movie about someone (Nick Monroy) deciding - just after hitting someone with his car - whether he should keep driving, or stop. After the accident he goes to work. Nobody seems to be in except for one co-worker (Katie Faris) who keeps cryptically beckoning him to "face it." The elevators and stairs are locked, and he soon suspects the co-worker saw the accident and that he may not be able to get away with it after all.

Philosophy

In The Time Between, the protagonist is forced to make a choice between the moral "right" answer, and the immoral (but seemingly easier) one. As a filmmaker, do you show a person who has done a horrible thing decide to run from it despite his awareness of how wrong it is, or do you have him do the right thing and face the tragedy he has unwillingly created?

Facing it, really, may seem like the harder path considering the consequences, but could he ever outrun himself and his past if he chose not to stop the car? You’ll have to see the movie to find out how he decides – and what his decision is.

Can you ever outrun the past? Can you forget things? With each passing day distant memories become more indistinct. Details are lost or distorted. In a way you lose yourself as time moves forward. Awakening to a new day builds new memories but also builds distance from old ones. There are, however, things best forgotten. There are always certain events and details you’d like to forget, but can you live with yourself while you’re in the process of forgetting? Can you consciously erase a major tragedy from your past? Imagine having to decide this in a matter of seconds. That’s what the title refers to, it’s the short moment he has, or the time between, his mistake and the decision he dreads to make.

The Time Between is actually a sort of alternate take on the Cowalker story. It deals with similar issues about trying to run from the past, and the haunting way a person's conscious can eat away at their grip on a moral dilemma. It can be seen as the events that precede Cowalker, but is a story not of dealing with a decision that has already been made, but of making the decision that could forever change your life.
